From: Karen
Subject: American Airlines Frequent Flier Miles Transfer

My father, an American Airlines frequent flier, died last year. My mother would like his frequent flier miles. American Airlines claims that they need a copy of the death certificate and $50.00 to "transfer" my Dad's miles to my Mom. Is this accurate? Is there a way to get her the miles without paying the "transfer" fee?

Dear Karen,

Unfortunately, the airlines have been sticking pretty hard to their fee rules. On occasion, if you get the right person, they will help you out, and give you a break. You might also try calling the frequent flyer center directly (reach them through the airlines main number), and plead your case for a waiver of the fee. However, bear in mind that depending on the number of miles your father had, $50 might not be so bad for use of those miles.

Good luck,
Joel
