From: Ira
Subject: Alaska

I'm trying to put together a vacation in Alaska for me and my 12 year old daughter for August of 2001. I keep seeing ads for cruises and accommodations that describe themselves as "luxurious" and "elegant." We are neither, and are looking for something between luxury and camping in the wilderness (eg. a plain, but comfortable cabin, guided kayaking trips, etc). I've done extensive searching on the web, and have found some possibilities for kayaking, but not much else. I'm concerned about traveling 2000 miles and perhaps having some unwelcome "surprises" when I get there. Any suggestions?

Dear Ira,

First of all, your key will be to seek quality, value, and the avoidance of unwanted surprises! If you can get a great price on a well-known luxury cruise (many cruise lines have overbuilt capacity and currently are under-booked, therefore offering good deals), you should still have the option for "roughing it." Additionally, call some of the top-tier cruise lines and inquire about their options for side excursions and then call those operators directly to see what they can offer you, on a more flexible basis.

Good luck,
Joel
