Subject: Frequent Flier Miles for China-Adoption

Dear Joel,

I am the one who e-mailed about traveling to China next summer for an adoption. I plan to buy economy and upgrade to business class with frequent flier miles. This is probably my only option since I haven started saving yet and can't imagine getting enough miles from now to next summer. By the way, my husband and child will be flying also. On your advice I called American Express. They said I could get the card for a fee of 150 dollars and sign up for an old rewards card. For getting the Amex card I would get 10,000 miles to start. Am I getting the best deal? Should I call the Diners Club? It did get a little confusing as Am. Ex. also mentioned a Delta Card and I don't understand how it is tied into the Amex card. Come to think of it, I think the 10,000 bonus miles were only if I get the Delta card. Your answer is anticipated as I need to start saving now. (We make credit card purchases every month of 2-3,000 and are considering adding a mortgage payment as an automatic deduction!) Also, we don't know what airline we will be using for quite a while.

Thanks,
Carrie

Hi Carrie,

I think that the Amex card is probably a better way to go because it can be used in more places then the Diners card. The Delta Sky Card is affiliated with Delta Airlines and the miles can only be used with Delta Airlines. However, you should be able to use those Delta miles for travel on China South Air which is a partner of Delta Airlines. Further, you might inquire if you can also earn membership reward points with the Delta Sky this would allow you to earn double points, miles with Delta Airlines, and points in the reward program. The fee seems a bit high, so I am not sure if it covers the annual fee for the card and the fee for the reward you might want to inquire further on the specifics of the fee.

Joel
