Subject: Airline First Class Upgrades

I am an elite member of Delta's FF program. Delta has prohibited L class fares from being upgraded. Can you suggest a technique to get on the waiting list if flying on an L class ticket?

Delta instituted a policy of not allowing upgrades on their lowest price tickets or L fares in 1998. This was actually in response to Delta's frequent flyers who asked that they restrict the upgrade policy so that upgrades would be available for those paying a higher fare. However, the next level fare (K fare) is an upgradeable fare.

As a Delta Elite member, I, too, have come across the inability to upgrade on the L fares. But I've found that the K fare typically does not cost that much more then the L fare. So this morning, for example, I made a reservation to fly from Orange County, CA to Washington National, and I paid $31, each way, above the cost of an L fare, for the ability to upgrade. It is true that it will cost me $62 to fly 5,000 miles in upgraded service. However, considering the advantages of the first class cabin and the length of the trip, it is a worthwhile investment. Moreover, considering Delta's rather liberal policy for upgrading elite members, it seems to be a fair trade-off. As I explain in my book, there are occasions when it is worthwhile and necessary to pay a bit more for first class service.

For those times when the K fare is unreasonably higher then the L fare, I recommend that you try to upgrade at the airport. Delta's phone agents will not automatically upgrade an L fare over the phone; however, at the airport you can cordially ask the ticket agent, crown room representative, or the gate agent to upgrade you or put you on the waiting list. If the cabin has room, you should get the upgrade. Remember to stress your loyalty and mention those times when you flew Delta paying the higher fares.

Good luck.
Joel
