Date: February 25, 2000 From: Gordon Allen To: Penny Pincher Subject: Airline First Class Upgrades Dear Joel, Thanks for your advise ["Airline First Class Upgrades," from Ask the Penny Pincher, October 4, 1999]. I have struck out with the ticket agents, crown room, and red coat gate agents on my last four L class trips. They won't even wait list me when first is not full. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Dear Gordon, The airlines are cracking the whip on L fares (the cheapest possible fares, usually with the most restrictions). My best suggestion at this time is to check out the K or M fares, often these are only a few dollars more and you can readily secure an upgrade to first class. Remember, all of this is cyclical and there should be a time when the airlines ease up a little on the rules. It is all centered on the demands of the customer and the state of the economy.
Gordon, I hope that this helps, and good luck.
