Date: May 5, 2000 From: Perplexed Dude in a Wheelchair, aka Louis Hall To: Penny Pincher Subject: Domestic Airlines with Large Washrooms Joel, Though I use a (wheel)chair, I've tried flying solo. Invariably, I end up on a plane which has a tiny inaccessible john after I describe my needs to a travel agent and/or reservations person, who assures me that I can easily get inside and use the toilet. None of the disability travel organizations have been helpful. I'll fly round-trip from Portland, Oregon to Nashville in a month, and I plan to book a super-saver. Where can I get accurate, reliable information? Perplexed Dude
Dear Perplexed Dude, Sadly, this issue has not been adequately addressed by the airlines. I am not aware of any airline that offers special restroom accommodations for the disabled traveler. Therefore, I suggest that you keep working through the special interest groups that serve disabled travelers and help them to make the airlines and public more aware of this plight.
All the best,
