Subject: Vacationing with Kids

Joel,

We would like to take a family vacation before the end of summer. We have two boys, ages 8 & 10. We would like to go somewhere that offers activities for kids AND adults. Do you have any good suggestions for either San Diego or Hawaii?

Katie

Dear Katie,

This summer offers some great opportunities to travel with children while allowing quiet time for the parents too.The Loews Coronado Bay Resort (619-424-4000) offers a variety of activities for both children and adults. The children's activities include surfing, kung fu, and tennis lessons. Additionally, they offer family activities like, a dive-in movie where a large screen television is set-up poolside and guests can enjoy snacks, dinner, and lots of popcorn. The parents can enjoy the hotel's beautiful pool, or shopping in some of the unique shops on Coronado island, as well as dining at one of the many fine restaurants at the hotel or on the island.

Most of the major hotels in Hawaii offer programs for kids. The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel (808-885-6622) offers a neat nature program. The kids have the opportunity to experience and learn about the nature and waterlife of the island. The nice benefit of this program is that the kids get lots of attention because the number of children is limited.Be sure to make your reservations in advance. Adults can relax by the pool, enjoy a challenging round of golf at the same course the PGA Seniors play on, or snorkel and kayak in the hotels' bay. Then they can take in a fine meal at one of the hotels' wonderful restaurants,. The main island of Hawaii (Oahu) offers a relatively obscure, but great program. The Honolulu Zoo (808-971-7195) offers the 'Zookeeper for a Day' program. Kids between the ages of 5 & 11 can spend a fun day filled doing zookeeper chores. They feed elephants, pet rhinos and care for the other animals. This is great for parents because it gives them a free day and the kids have a great time. Beware that many hotels are not even aware of this program, so call the zoo directly and arrange transportation through your hotel.

I have stayed at both the Loews Coronado Bay Resort and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, and have enjoyed them both.

Have a great trip!
Joel
