Date: Aug 18 1999 From: Kyra To: Penny Pincher Subject: South Pacific Travel Dear Penny Pincher, We are taking a 6 month sabatical and traveling with our 4 & 7 year olds to the South Pacific, hoping to visit Hawaii, the Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. Out schedule is to leave in January and return in June. Any tips on how to make it economical and adventuresome for all of us? -- Kyra
Hi Kyra, A few of suggestions for what sounds like a great trip. When making your travel arrangements, I recommend you call travel partners (airlines, hotels, etc.) directly. This will allow you to gather information on special deals, the best time to travel to get the best rates, and negotiate any upgrades. If you can be flexible about your travel plans, you will have greater opportunity to find and partake of some excellent bargains. For example, when traveling from one location to another, find out when the 'light travel' times are for that travel market so you can secure a discounted fair if you can fly during those times. Whenever I travel to a city where I am unfamiliar with the hotels, I ususally make a reservation for at least the first night, then while in the city I research other hotels that might offer a better deal. Furthermore, if any of the hotels you plan to visit offer a concierge floor I recommmend you attempt to gain access to that floor. This will save you a tremendous amount of money you might otherwise spend on breakfast, drinks and snacks. One of the best techniques for gaining access is to simply ask to be upgraded. I have found the best people to ask for an upgrade are a front desk representative or a bell person. Often I will offer them a reasonable tip which will pay for itself with the extra ammenities you receive as a guest on the concierge floor. Finally, try to head towards Hawaii as close to June as possible as this is when Hawaii is in a 'shoulder season,' or slow period. During this time you will be able to find good rates on airfares, hotels, and car rentals. Have a great trip! -- Joel
