Date: July 15, 2000 From: Julie To: Penny Pincher Subject: United frequent flier miles Dear Joel, I am planning a trip from SFO to Vietnam. I have booked my trip using United miles and found out it will use 95,000 miles since I have to fly on Thai Air. United's mile usage for Asia travel was listed at 60,000. Is this a good use of my miles? Also, I have an overnight layover in Bangkok both ways and want to know if there is another option (standby??), so I can get to Vietnam faster (it's only a 90 minute flight). Julie
Dear Julie, Although I am not aware of the specifics, based on the information provided, I would have to say that 95,000 miles is not a great use of miles. I would look for a bargain fare, by taking advantage of one of the many international air-fare specials. If you can find a fare for about $600and use 40,000 miles to upgrade, you will have a $4,000 ticket for $600 out of pocket and $800 in mileage value (.02 X 40,000) verses spending $1900 in mileage cost. Moreover, you will have a much nicer flight, being upgraded for the extended flight, than you would sitting in coach.
Good luck,
