Subject: Using Frequent Flyer Miles

Dear Joel,

I have a number of frequent flyer miles with various airlines. My travel schedule does not really allow me to choose which airline to use when traveling, so I am never really able to accumulate enough miles for free travel and I am not interested in upgrades. I have heard of some companies where you can trade in frequent flyer miles for magazine subscriptions. I realize some are legitimate and some are a rip off (based on the fact that each mile is worth approximately 2.5 cents). What is the best way to find the legitimate sources?

Thanks,
Larry Ehlinger

Dear Larry,

The best way to determine the most legitimate source for your miles is to check your frequent flyer statements, visit an airline Web site, or call the airline directly using their toll-free number. Usually frequent flyer programs have special deals for alternative uses of miles. Many airlines will allow you to redeem miles for merchandise, such as magazines; or give them as a gift to others; or even donate them to a charity. Another good resource is Randy Petersen Web site, www.webflyer.com, an excellent site for up to the minute news on frequent flyer miles and programs. With the plethora of miles available these days I think the value of miles is closer to .1 to 11/2 cents.

Good luck,
Joel
